  Within accommodation spaces, service spaces and control stations-
  
  (a) all ceilings, linings, draught stops and insulating materials shall be of non-combustible materials except for-
  
  (i) materials used to insulate refrigerated compartments;
  
  (ii) materials used to insulate valves associated with hot and cold service systems, provided that their exposed surfaces shall have a surface spread of flame standard acceptable to the Director;
  
  (iii) vapour barriers and adhesives used in conjunction with insulating materials, provided that their exposed surfaces shall have a surface spread of flame standard acceptable to the Director;
  
  (b) the framing, grounds and joint pieces of linings, ceilings and draught stops shall be non-combustible;
  
  (c) bulkheads, ceilings and linings shall not be faced with a combustible veneer unless the thickness of such a veneer does not exceed 2.0 millimetres, except in corridors, stairway enclosures and control stations where it shall not exceed 1.5 millimetres;
  
  (d) all exposed surfaces in corridors and stairway enclosures and surfaces in concealed or inaccessible spaces shall have a surface spread of flame standard acceptable to the Director;
  
  (e) primary deck coverings shall be of a type which will not readily ignite.
  
  63(3)
  
  Paints, varnishes and other finishes used on exposed surfaces within accommodation and services spaces, control stations and machinery spaces shall not contain nitro-cellulose or other highly flammable base products and such surfaces, except where otherwise required by these Regulations, shall be such that a Class 3 surface spread of flame will not be exceeded: provided that these requirements shall not apply to furniture, furnishings, machinery and similar items.
  
  Paints, varnishes and other finishes used on exposed surfaces within accommodation and service spaces, control stations and machinery spaces shall not contain nitro-cellulose or other highly flammable base products and such surfaces, except where otherwise required by these Regulations, shall have a surface spread of flame standard acceptable to the Director: provided that these requirements shall not apply to furniture, furnishings, machinery and similar items.
  
  PART II
  
  Merchant Shipping Notice No. M965
  
  (1) Electrical equipment and installations referred to in regulations 5 and 10 of the Merchant Shipping (Cargo Ship Construction and Survey) Regulations 1981 (S.I. 1981/572 U.K.) shall comply with the following requirements, except to the extent that those requirements are inconsistent with the said Regulations.
  
  (a) Ships the keels of which were laid on or after 26 May 1965 but before 25 May 1980 shall conform with the relevant provisions of the Regulations for the Electrical Equipment of Ships issued by the Institution of Electrical Engineers and dated September 1961.
  
  (1) Electrical equipment and installations referred to in regulations 5 and 10 of the Merchant Shipping (Cargo Ship Construction and Survey) Regulations 1981 (S.I. 1981/572 U.K.) shall comply with the following requirements, except to the extent that those requirements are inconsistent with the said Regulations.
  
  (a) Ships the keels of which were laid on or after 26 May 1965 but before 25 May 1980 shall conform with the relevant provisions of the Regulations for the Electrical Equipment of Ships issued by the United Kingdom Institution of Electrical Engineers and dated September 1961.
  
  (b) Ships the keels of which were laid or were at a similar stage of construction on or after 25 May 1980 but before 1 May 1981 shall conform with Regulations 1 to 14 inclusive of the Regulations for the Electrical and Electronic Equipment of Ships, 5th edition (1972) and the Recommended Practice for the implementation of the Regulations for the Electrical and Electronic Equipment of Ships 1972, as amended in 1974 and 1977, issued by the Institution of Electrical Engineers.
  
  (b) Ships the keels of which were laid or were at a similar stage of construction on or after 25 May 1980 but before 1 May 1981 shall conform with Regulations 1 to 14 inclusive of the Regulations for the Regulations for the Electrical and Electronic Equipment of Ships, 5th edition (1972) and the Recommended Practice for the implementation of the Regulations for the Electrical and Electronic Equipment of Ships 1972, as amended in 1974 and 1977, issued by the United Kingdom Institution of Electrical Engineers.
  
  (c) Ships the keels of which are laid or are at a similar stage of construction on or after 1 May 1981 shall conform with Regulations 1 to 14 inclusive of the Regulations for the Electrical and Electronic Equipment of Ships, 5th edition (1972). In such ships electrical equipment and installations which comply with the Recommended Practice for the implementation of the Regulations for the Electrical and Electronic Equipment of Ships 1972, as amended in 1974, 1977 and 1982 as referred to in (b) above shall be deemed to satisfy Regulations 1 to 14 of the Regulations for the Electrical and Electronic Equipment of Ships, 5th edition (1972) and Regulations 5 and 10 of the Merchant Shipping (Cargo Ship Construction and Survey) Regulations 1981 (S.I. 1981/572 U.K.), such ships which are used for the purpose of exploration and development of liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon resources shall also be deemed to satisfy the aforementioned regulations if the electrical equipment and installations comply with the requirements specified in the Appendix.
